Holiday Party 12/14/17

Thank you Martha Sims for organizing the Holiday Party and also those who helped set up: Joan McDonald, Dona Price, Lou Huppke, Ingrid Bolton, Nancy Rhodes, Nancy Hunt and Donna and Bob Richardson.  It was a special time for all of us!   For a few hours we set aside our agendas and enjoyed the company of one another.  The mixed media project was a fun way to get back into our child like creativity.  Thank you Carol Reidy for the idea and Eric Carle for the inspirations.  Lou Huppke took the finished projects to the Gateway Center in Gainesville, and they were very appreciative

November 16th GAL Program with
Dr. John Hemmer and his wife Jane Hemmer

What a blessing it was for Dr John and Jane Hemmer speak at our GAL meeting last week.
Jane explained her process of creating bronze, plaster and clay sculptures. She also brought in a
2,000 year old skull where she did forensic facial reconstruction of the face of an individual from their skeletal remains. Jane explained that skulls can be divided into 4 main human races, and said she would be happy to bring samples to one of our future meetings.  Dr John brought numerous samples of his exquisite bowls and vases created with a woodturning lathe.  Most of the wood he uses comes from their farm, White Sulphur Properties, where they raise Belted Galloway Cattle “Oreo” cows originating from Scotland.Thank you, Dr John and Jane, for generously sharing your time and talents with the group.  Everyone enjoyed seeing your work. Thank you, Bob Richardson for posting pictures on the GAL FB page.

GAL Program Presenter Debra Barnhart 10/10/17

Debra's travels and education have contributed much to her development as an artist. According to Barnhart, her purpose as an artist “is to make the viewer experience what is magical and spiritual about life and being human. I want to inspire a sense of awe and fascination.”
Debra’s presentation will focus on how she composes her digital artworks and will be placing special emphasis on her recent trip to Africa.
Debra is a full time artist living in Duluth, Georgia, Barnhart’s home away from home is her studio at Tannery Row Artist Colony in Buford, Georgia.
Barnhart was born in Plainfield, New Jersey and spent most of her life living in New Jersey until she and her husband moved to Georgia in 2001.
A large part of Barnhart’s adult life in the north was spent working in the advertising industry in New York City; she was a media buyer for three different advertising agencies in Manhattan and an account executive at two magazines over a 16-year period. Her last position in New York was as an account executive at Art and Antiques Magazine. In 1999 she earned of Master of Arts in Fine Arts from Montclair State University.
Over the last year Barnhart has been working on a digital print series entitled “Myth, Legend and Religion.” Each artwork consists of a photograph of a statue layered over a photographed or scanned background that she creates by coating old National Geographic magazines with a cleaning solvent, Citrasolv. The Citrasolv “melts” often have beautiful textures and painterly effects.
Many of the prints in this series utilize photos the artist took in Europe and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Several are composed of photos of my own sculpture.
In September, 2017 Barnhart traveled to South Africa on a photo safari where she took over 1,000 photos. Contact

ANITA ELDER GAL Presenter 10/21/17

We had a packed house last week at the GAL meeting.  Anita Elder gave a wonderful oil painting demonstration, and gave us great ideas on how to create a better painting.   Anita uses a grey toned sketchbook to work out the composition and uses a light and dark charcoal pencil to get her values.  She suggested using a limited pallet to keep the harmony of your colors: Alizarin Crimson, Cad. Medium Red Light, Cad Medium Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, and Colbalt Blue, Transparent Red Oxide, and Veridian.  Anita uses a plein air set up from Artwork Essentials:  http://www.artworkessentials.com.  She does an underpainting using ultramarine blue and transparent red oxide mixed with Gamblin Galkyd.  Her favorite brushes are Rosemary #4, 6, 8 and 10.  Anita is a thorough, organized teacher and a very accomplished artist.  If you are interested in taking lessons, following is her contact information.  Thank you Anita!

JULY 20, 2017 Program with Patricia Fabian

Picture
Patricia Fabian gave us many pearls of wisdom during her laid back presentation. She knows how to how fun! Some of her tips included using masonite boards bought at home depot, they will cut them for you, and then applying Kilz with a 2” roller.  She “Allow mistakes to happen, it will take you to the next level”.  Patricia recommended two books:
Year of Yes, How to Dance It Out, Stand In the Sun and Be Your Own Person By Shonda Rhimes, and
Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon
During her presentation, Patricia asked different groups to become our models while we sketched them…some were partying (Alyce Black was in this group), sad, confused, and those who had been on hold with the cable company.  It was very entertaining and with a 2 minute time limit it stretched all of us.  She stressed that we need to allow mistakes to happen, letting it take us to the next level, proving you can experiment and come up with something unique.  One of her experiences she shared was during a Sketch Club meeting where the model didn’t show up and someone filled in, not particularly excited about modeling for the group.  At first she was disappointed, but remember there is something beautiful in everything, every person, every situation so she stopped her negative thinking and started to draw, and then the person became a mystery.  “ Brenau University used  the painting from this session on the cover of their brochure.  “My Blue Heart”  Life isn’t perfect, leave some of the underpainting showing, less is more!”
"Painting is a journey.  I never assume to have the answers before I start but rather wait for the suggestion that comes in the process of painting the work.  I find more with less and I find peace with stepping outside of the box and listening to what comes next."  Patricia will be teaching  “Contemporary Figure Painting” at The Quinlan, 9/18-10/9.  info@qvac.org

June 15, 2017 Program with Adrienne Kinsey

Adrienne Forshner Kinsey manipulates acrylic to mimic other materials, such as glass, concrete, and wax, and even molds it by hand into sculptural forms. She incorporates other mediums and materials with acrylic to create unique textures and dimension. "I choose to work abstractly, on multiple paintings at once, because it enhances my own creativity and imagination. I'll often rework a painting two or three times because I love the layers of shapes and colors underneath." Originally from Dalton, Georgia, Adrienne received eleven years of formal education in the arts, including graduation from the North Carolina School of the Arts, a BA in Studio Art from Florida State University, and a BFA with a concentration in Interior Design from the University of Georgia. When she is not creating, Adrienne offers both group classes and private art lessons in her Tannery Row Studio. The Tannery Row Artist Colony is housed in a 120 year old former leather factory in historic downtown Buford, Georgia.

May 18, 2017 Program with Michael McDougal

For his demonstration, Michael shared with the the attendees how he painted the "Three Ducks" painting.  He likes to take photographs of scenery with his camera and then display the photos on my large monitor in my art studio for reference. Also attached the portrait that was completed for the hospice patient in which the family shared a favorite photo of their loved one.
"I became interested in art and drawing at an early age while in grammar school.  I lost my love for drawing when baseball became my passion but when I enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War I discovered painting by numbers.  Then, I quickly discarded the number paintings and started painting on my own. In 1957 I was discharged from the Navy and applied to the Vesper George School of Art in Boston. I was surprised when they accepted me and I began school in hopes to become a commercial artist. I spent seven years developing my art business and then in 1970 my brother Dan joined me to form McDougall Associates, Inc.. Our business developed into a full service advertising and marketing agency and grew to become the 6th largest advertising agency in New England.  In December of 1999 we sold our business to a large New York agency and my brother and I retired.  With my new found free time I again began focusing on drawing and painting.  It is fun to share my artwork with others and I have been encouraged to continue painting after receiving numerous awards throughout the years."  Michael McDougal

 Judith Surowiec: Program
Everyone had a fantastic time at the meeting Thursday.  Thank you Judith!
Judith Surowiec grew up in Buffalo,NY. Inspired by her creative mother and the work of Charles Burchfield, she studied art at SUNY and graduated with a degree in Art Education. Judith and her family moved from state to state affording her the opportunity to meet new artists and become involved with the arts of each community.  During one move to Atlanta, she began studying with Joseph Perrin. Her work made a dramatic change as it exploded with color. This class gave her courage to take risks.“Beginning painters usually have a preconceived idea of how their painting should come out and reject any strange lines and colors that may appear on their canvas.  It is only when you accept the weird that you are being creative and the inner self comes out.  Weird brings freedom. Weird is wonderful … be not afraid.”

7/21/16 Demonstration by Claudia Wilburn

Picture
We had  over 40 people in attendance! There were many new members and some of our long time members like Rosemary Dodd and Michael Melson joined us.  It was great seeing everyone, and we missed those who could not make it.
Claudia Wilburn demonstrated image transfer techniques and she brought supplies so we could get some hands-on experience.
Much of Claudia’s artwork is based on memories of emotions and circumstances she has experienced.  She uses her own photographs, sketchbooks, writings and found text.  She said most of her work has been “autobiographical" and has found a spiritual experience that allows her to work through sensitive emotions with a variety of memories. Her grandfather was a minister, and some parts of his sermons are in her work.
Claudia gave us great tips on how to transfer images using ordinary hand sanitizer with an ink jet printer and decal papers.  http://claudiawilburn.tumblr.com/post/32682959862/image-transfers-made-with-ink-jet-prints-and-hand   Thank you Claudia!
Thank you to those who helped with the meeting:  Joan McDonald, Susan Gwaltney and Martha Sims - and all those who helped clean up after the meeting.  We appreciate our volunteers!
