Debra's travels and education have contributed much to her development as an artist. According to Barnhart, her purpose as an artist “is to make the viewer experience what is magical and spiritual about life and being human. I want to inspire a sense of awe and fascination.”
Debra’s presentation will focus on how she composes her digital artworks and will be placing special emphasis on her recent trip to Africa. Debra is a full time artist living in Duluth, Georgia, Barnhart’s home away from home is her studio at Tannery Row Artist Colony in Buford, Georgia. Barnhart was born in Plainfield, New Jersey and spent most of her life living in New Jersey until she and her husband moved to Georgia in 2001. A large part of Barnhart’s adult life in the north was spent working in the advertising industry in New York City; she was a media buyer for three different advertising agencies in Manhattan and an account executive at two magazines over a 16-year period. Her last position in New York was as an account executive at Art and Antiques Magazine. In 1999 she earned of Master of Arts in Fine Arts from Montclair State University. Over the last year Barnhart has been working on a digital print series entitled “Myth, Legend and Religion.” Each artwork consists of a photograph of a statue layered over a photographed or scanned background that she creates by coating old National Geographic magazines with a cleaning solvent, Citrasolv. The Citrasolv “melts” often have beautiful textures and painterly effects. Many of the prints in this series utilize photos the artist took in Europe and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Several are composed of photos of my own sculpture. In September, 2017 Barnhart traveled to South Africa on a photo safari where she took over 1,000 photos. Patricia Fabian gave us many pearls of wisdom during her laid back presentation. She knows how to how fun! Some of her tips included using masonite boards bought at home depot, they will cut them for you, and then applying Kilz with a 2” roller. She “Allow mistakes to happen, it will take you to the next level”. Patricia recommended two books:
Year of Yes, How to Dance It Out, Stand In the Sun and Be Your Own Person By Shonda Rhimes, and Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon During her presentation, Patricia asked different groups to become our models while we sketched them…some were partying (Alyce Black was in this group), sad, confused, and those who had been on hold with the cable company. It was very entertaining and with a 2 minute time limit it stretched all of us. She stressed that we need to allow mistakes to happen, letting it take us to the next level, proving you can experiment and come up with something unique. One of her experiences she shared was during a Sketch Club meeting where the model didn’t show up and someone filled in, not particularly excited about modeling for the group. At first she was disappointed, but remember there is something beautiful in everything, every person, every situation so she stopped her negative thinking and started to draw, and then the person became a mystery. “ Brenau University used the painting from this session on the cover of their brochure. “My Blue Heart” Life isn’t perfect, leave some of the underpainting showing, less is more!” "Painting is a journey. I never assume to have the answers before I start but rather wait for the suggestion that comes in the process of painting the work. I find more with less and I find peace with stepping outside of the box and listening to what comes next." Patricia will be teaching “Contemporary Figure Painting” at The Quinlan, 9/18-10/9. info@qvac.org |
Adrienne Forshner Kinsey manipulates acrylic to mimic other materials, such as glass, concrete, and wax, and even molds it by hand into sculptural forms. She incorporates other mediums and materials with acrylic to create unique textures and dimension. "I choose to work abstractly, on multiple paintings at once, because it enhances my own creativity and imagination. I'll often rework a painting two or three times because I love the layers of shapes and colors underneath." Originally from Dalton, Georgia, Adrienne received eleven years of formal education in the arts, including graduation from the North Carolina School of the Arts, a BA in Studio Art from Florida State University, and a BFA with a concentration in Interior Design from the University of Georgia. When she is not creating, Adrienne offers both group classes and private art lessons in her Tannery Row Studio. The Tannery Row Artist Colony is housed in a 120 year old former leather factory in historic downtown Buford, Georgia.

For his demonstration, Michael shared with the the attendees how he painted the "Three Ducks" painting. He likes to take photographs of scenery with his camera and then display the photos on my large monitor in my art studio for reference. Also attached the portrait that was completed for the hospice patient in which the family shared a favorite photo of their loved one.
"I became interested in art and drawing at an early age while in grammar school. I lost my love for drawing when baseball became my passion but when I enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War I discovered painting by numbers. Then, I quickly discarded the number paintings and started painting on my own. In 1957 I was discharged from the Navy and applied to the Vesper George School of Art in Boston. I was surprised when they accepted me and I began school in hopes to become a commercial artist. I spent seven years developing my art business and then in 1970 my brother Dan joined me to form McDougall Associates, Inc.. Our business developed into a full service advertising and marketing agency and grew to become the 6th largest advertising agency in New England. In December of 1999 we sold our business to a large New York agency and my brother and I retired. With my new found free time I again began focusing on drawing and painting. It is fun to share my artwork with others and I have been encouraged to continue painting after receiving numerous awards throughout the years." Michael McDougal |
