Judges Criteria for Judging
Amanda Lovett Criteria for Judging for the Fall Exhibition
My choices will be based on the following points:
Initial Impression: At first glance, is the artwork striking? Does it have qualities that lure you in and hold your attention? In a room full of art does it stand out?
Composition: Is there a strong flow and lead in to focal point? Does it move well and keep your eye within the piece.
Drawing (if applicable) Is the subject rendered well, whether with great detail or simply implying the subject matter?
Shapes, Value and Edges: Is there good variety in shapes? Appropriate value shifts (strongest contrast at center of interest)? In the case of painting, does the use of edges, lost and found, add to depth and dimension of the piece?
Color and Brushwork (if applicable): Does it have pleasing and consistent color harmony? Good temperature shifts? I look for strong confident brushwork that uses texture to create added depth and atmosphere.
Any Judgment of art is subjective to personal taste. It is my goal to look past this and evaluate each piece based on skill of execution and creativity. Does the artist show a strong command of their medium and take pride in strong and supportive presentation.
