JUDGE'S STATEMENTS
BEST OF SHOW: KAREN STURM "AND WE'RE STILL TOGETHER" Great interpretation of the theme "Life Cycles". Excellent use of the media and a strong composition. The subject matter is arranged in such a way to allow the viewer to wonder what is being spoken between these two life partners. AWARD OF EXCELLENCE: EARLAN GILL "NEW LIFE" Human Form, texture of the brush stroke implies constant change and potential growth with the study of the nude model. PHOTOGRAPHY 1st Place: CINDY TODD "SUMMER AT OLYPIC PARK" Great range of greys and contrast in this Black & White photograph. Strong composition with details in the foreground, middle and background. Captures a moment of play in a hot urban environment. 2nd Place: TRAVIS MASSEY "HOPE EMERGING" Excellent interpretation of the theme. Careful attention to quality and details. The image is well rendered and the subject is powerful. 3rd Place: ROBERT RICHARDSON "MT RUNDLE BANFF" Classic subject matter. Strong composition and attention placement of the subject. It is just off center to remind the viewer to wonder what the rest of the scene holds. Honorable Mention: MARSHA HOPKINS "INNER SPACE" Unique setting and subject. Great attention for form and shape with abstracted lines to move the eye around the composition. PAINTING 1st Place: NANCY HUNT "CITY SHOWERS" The texture of the pastel lines imply the movement of rain on a cloudy day. The use of red makes a great point of emphasis and the position of the forms indicate the experience of walking in a city on a rainy day. 2nd Place: ANDREA KINDLE “TWO YELLOW ROSES” Lovely still life rendered in oil. Subtle texture implies movement of the eye with horizontal shifts of paint (intentional smudges) almost creates the idea of a memory; you are looking at objects on a table and quickly turn away as something distracts you. 3rd Place: ANNE TRIPPE “TIPSY TULIPS” Great reference to the action of falling with the diagonal lines of the glass vase. Depth & motion are also implied with the flowers; they are upright in the back and the more closer to the viewer and edge of the glass the flowers open towards the glass. Honorable Mention: JACKIE WEST “HARVEST TIME” Great use of texture, color and form. It gives the impression of old wood and metal buckets left out after a harvest. There is a great rendering of a small carrot in the bucket on the lower left. 3-DIMINSIONAL 1st Place: SUSAN GWALTNEY “IN THE ATTIC” So much to discover, juxtaposition of various media and this enhances the mystery and it is like looking in your grandmother attic. 2nd Place: ANN ZAWACKI “DADDY & GRANDMA FALAH” Great use of authentic and found memorabilia. Evokes nostalgia and memory of the time and place. These very different elements combine a strong composition. 3rd Place: CAROL DUCKWORTH “SILK FISH & LILY PAD” Great use of media, color and detail of the subject. The colors are lutenist and the lines of the subjects mini the flow of the fabric used as the surface. Honorable Mention: CAROL REIDY "TALL TOWER" Dark glaze and form of the structure imply strength and mystery. The openings in the walls allow the viewer to explore various details of the interior. Textures and shapes on the surface also encourage the viewer to consider her message.
