JUDGE'S STATEMENTS

BEST OF SHOW:  "Not So Itsy Bitsy" by Karen Sturm.  The background is obscure; the spider looks like it's sitting on top of the web.  The Spider has mass.  Overall good design.
AWARD OF EXCELLENCE:  "A 'Memory' Piece" by Heidi Bowman.  It has a nice, delicate feel.  Special attention was displayed with intricate detail.
Photography Awards
1st PLACE;  "Morning Breaks" by Travis Massey.  This photograph gives the viewer the sense of being in a cave looking through to the far distance.  The natural framework has a beautiful warmth and glow overhead. Likes how the matted frame adds depth.
2nd PLACE;  "Ruby Throated Hummingbird" by Bob Richardson.  Picture has a lovely overall feeling with a great depth of field.  It feels like a painting and has a softness that makes you want to touch it.  The artist captured the speed and motion.
3rd PLACE:  "Spring in Bloom" by Cynthia Todd.  This picture has a strong composition, linear lines created by the fence, the tree tops pulling the viewer's eyes back around, creating a nice circular movement.
Honorable Mention:  "Indian Teepee Ornament" by Heidi Bowman.  This picture has a nice composition, liked the abstraction of the design and the eye movement.  The frame worked nicely with the piece.
Painting/Mixed Media Awards
1st PLACE;  "Riding Home" by Lowell Crawford.  This painting has a beautiful warmth with strong composition  The use of perspective leads the eye to the horizon.  Good use of foreground detail but not too much.  Diminishing detail and color receding towards the horizon both help lead the eye into the painting.
2nd PLACE:  "Deer Grazing" by Ann Alexander.  The color and rendering of the background and trees pushes them back nicely making the deer come forward.  The warm glow on the deer adds overall warmth to the painting,
3rd PLACE;  "Patriot" by Susan Gwaltney.  Good composition and perspective. "The artist captured the essence of the child".
Honorable Mention:  "Woodland Path" by Betty Laws Smith.  The artist captured the warmth of a fall day.  The winding road leads the eye into the painting.
